About

The idea of two ships meeting in the midst of vast seas, the captain “being conscious of the eyes of the whole visible world resting on him from the sides of the two ships”, as Melville wrote it drolly, appeals to me as a kind of metaphor for thinking aloud in public.

I am a professor of Middle East Politics at SOAS and The Gamming is my little space for taking notes and thinking aloud on all the things I am reading and researching for my project on the emergence of transport infrastructure in the Middle East. I am particularly interested in the role of military mobilities, trade and capital accumulation, and struggles over labour and citizenship rights in the making of these transport infrastructures.
